AN INDEPENDENT KOLKATA STORYHOUSE

A city tells its stories
before history edits them.

Kolkata in rain and argument. Pujo lights, para politics, family silences, food passed across a table, and the adda that was never meant to end.

FOUR NOVELS · ONE RESTLESS CITY

KOLKATA, RETOLD

Home is sometimes a place.
Sometimes it is the argument
you still know by heart.

Dhak heard through an open window. Bhog on a paper plate. Tea cooling beside a political argument. A tram bell in rain. A familiar lane altered by one new wall.

These novels begin there, among people neither heroic nor villainous, trying to belong to families, neighbourhoods and promises that keep changing shape.

FROM THE AUTHOR’S NOTEBOOK

Four stories.
No tourist map.

The city arrives gradually: first as a voice, then as a room, a committee, a family, a secret. Read only what you want to know before opening the book.

The Great Para Elections cover

TGPE

The Great Para Elections

One park. Two committees. Unlimited democracy.

Durga Pujo is nearly here. So are the rival committees, remembered grievances and the affectionate certainty that everybody else is doing it wrong.

THE AUTHOR’S LENS

Told with the fond impatience of someone who knows that a Bengali committee meeting is never merely a meeting.

02
And the Tears Run Dry cover

ATTRD

And the Tears Run Dry

Merit itself is on sale.

A quieter Kolkata story, where public corruption crosses the threshold and enters kitchens, classrooms and the silences families keep.

THE AUTHOR’S LENS

Here the author turns from the public spectacle to its private cost, especially the labour and memory carried by mothers.

03
One Vote Short cover

OVS

One Vote Short

A perfectly balanced political disaster.

One vote disturbs a careful balance. What follows is an adult political farce about arithmetic, appetite and respectable panic.

THE AUTHOR’S LENS

An accountant’s eye meets a storyteller’s ear: the numbers add up, while almost nothing else does.

04
As the Graffiti on the Walls Fades cover

ATGOTWF

As the Graffiti on the Walls Fades

Kolkata changes. The walls remember.

Six intertwined lives move through fifteen years of a changing city, where belonging, desire and complicity refuse easy explanations.

THE AUTHOR’S LENS

The author watches time rather than a single event, allowing families, friendships and promises to reveal what change leaves behind.

STORIES IN MOTION

Not trailers.
Fragments of a city.

Short scenes, spoken lines and remembered Kolkata moments introduce the atmosphere without surrendering the plot. New video posts return here for the full story and the reading room.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

An observer inside
the argument.

Amit Banerjee is a Chartered Accountant whose fiction grows out of contemporary Kolkata and West Bengal: ward committees and polling booths, kitchens and drawing rooms, and the ordinary places where people brush against power.

His authorial stance changes with each story: amused insider, political accountant, family witness, patient observer of time. The common ground is a city allowed to remain complicated.
